About me

Hi! My name is Jessie Binkley and I teach 5th grade math. I have taught at CMS since 2017 and love the students and staff I get to work with!  I graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Elementary Education and my Master's Degree in Elementary Education. I taught in Nashville for 2 years before coming home to Cheatham County. In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, traveling, trying out new restaurants, and cheering on the Vols.

5th grade has completed all TNReady testing as of today! Thank you for your excellent attendance during the last week of testing!

In math this week, we will be going back over Order of Operations (5.OA.1) and students will test over this on either Thursday or Friday.

Field Day for 5th grade will be next Thursday, May 2nd. Instead of holding events at school, we will be taking students to Cheatham Dam for the day. Your student came home with a permission slip today, so please sign and return that ASAP so that we can make sure everyone is able to attend.  Students will receive 2 hot dogs and a water, provided by the school, for lunch that day. We will also be asking that students from our team bring in bottled water donations so that we can make sure the students stay hydrated. The other 5th grade teams will be donating chips and desserts.

We still have 5 weeks of school left, including this week. We will be having regular classes and learning new things with this last bit of school we have, so please make sure your child is at school and on time as much as possible.

March 18-22

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • TNReady is quickly approaching and we will be working hard on our last bit of major standards until Spring Break! Please make sure your child is present as much as possible!
  • We will be learning more about volume, specifically measuring the volume of rectangular prisms and irregular figures (5.MD.C.5) this week. Students will test over this skill on Thursday.
  • This is the last week for students to retake any tests from the 3rd Quarter. If your child was unhappy with their Q3 grade, they should definitely be retaking tests to improve their grade this week! Have them complete a retake contract ASAP.

March 11 - 15

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • TNReady is quickly approaching and we will be working hard on our last bit of major standards until Spring Break! Please make sure your child is present as much as possible!
  • Students will test over dividing fractions and whole numbers (5.NF.7) on Monday. Students received a study guide last week that looks nearly identical to the test.
  • This week we will begin learning about volume and how to measure volume of rectangular prisms (5.MD.3 & 4). Students will test over this on Friday
  • Students will take the Math Benchmark test on Thursday morning. Please make sure your student is here on time!

5.NF.3 STUDY GUIDE

This study guide will cover the standard below:

5.NF.3  Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator. Solve contextual problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.

Students will test on this standard on either March 5th or 6th, depending on the progression of their class!

March 4 - 8

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • TNReady is quickly approaching and we will be working hard on our last bit of major standards until Spring Break!
  • This week, we will wrap up our practice on interpreting fractions as division (5.NF.3) and will test on this skill on either Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on when each class is ready. Some classes are further along than others, so it can vary from class to class.
  • We will also be learning how to divide fractions and whole numbers (5.NF.7) and will test over this skill on Friday.

Helpful Resources for this week's skills:

2nd Flood Day Assignment

Attached is the PowerPoint over 5.MD.2, which is over creating and using line plots with data sets that include fractions. This is the review skill we were supposed to cover this week. The slides include problems with an answer key to the problems on the following slide. Please email me if you have any questions about the problems. I am including a link below to additional practice over this skill.

Flood Day Assignments

Attached is a copy of the study guide for our current skill, 5.NF.5, which is interpreting multiplication as scaling or resizing.  This was what we will do the next time we have class. Repetition and constant practice is key for students to master math skills! I would highly encourage your student to get a jump start on this study guide. We will go over it together in class the next time we have school. A link to practice on this skill will also be listed below.

February 19-22

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • This week, we will learn about seeing multiplying fractions as scaling (5.NF.5) and will test over it on Thursday.
  • ***Students will receive a study guide that is nearly identical to the test. If they want to be successful on the test, I would highly recommend they complete the study guide and ask questions in class as needed.***
  • This standard challenges students to recognize that when they multiply by a number greater than 1, that their product will be larger than the given factor. When multiplying by a number equal to 1, the product will be equal to the given factor and when multiplying by a number less than 1 the product will be less than the given factor.
  • This week’s CIM review skill will be creating and using line plots with fractions (5.MD.2). Students will test over this skill on Friday.

February 11 - 15

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • This week, we will go over our multiplying fractions study guide in class on Monday.
  • Students will test on Multiplying Fractions (5.NF.4 & 5.NF.6) on Tuesday
  • Students will take their CIM assessment from last week (5.NF.1 & 5.NF.2) on Wednesday
  • We will begin learning how to view multiplying fractions as scaling (5.NF.5). Students will test over this skill on Friday, however this may be adjusted to next week if necessary.
  • We will begin reviewing our work with line plots with fractions (5.MD.2) and will test over it next week.
  • Please remember that students are allowed to retake any test that has a grade less than an A. All students need to do is fill out a retake contract from me. This is the best way to help them improve their grade!

February 4 - 8

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • Because of TLA testing and inclement weather closings & delays, we will still be doing a lot of the things we had planned for last week.
  • Students will be reviewing how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (5.NF.1 & 2) this week.
  • We will continue multiplying fractions by whole numbers, other fractions, and mixed numbers (5.NF.4 & 6)
  • Students will have an assessment over both of these skills on Friday.
Below are some links to resources that I find helpful for these skills.

January 28 - February 1

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • On Monday, we will spend the day working to find students’ reading levels by completing their text level assessments (TLAs). We will continue working on these this week until we get them all finished.
  • We will have the CIM test over decimal operations word problems (5.NBT.7) on Monday.
  • We will be reviewing adding and subtracting fractions (5.NF.1 & 5.NF.2) this week.

January 22-25

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • We will continue learning how to multiply fractions (standards 5.NF.4 & 5.NF.6) throughout this week. Students must be able to multiply fractions by whole numbers, mixed numbers, and other fractions when they are given to them and when they are found in real-world problems.
  • Students will test on this skill next week.
  • We will also be reviewing decimal operations (5.NBT.7) this week. Students will be given a real-world problem and will have to determine the necessary operation and then solve them problem. There will be a test over this skill on Friday.

January 14-18

  • Homework is due on Friday, but students are welcome to turn it in early!
  • Last week, each student set a goal specifically for math class. Please ask your student about their goal and the plan they have set to achieve their goal!
  • We will wrap up our practice with line plots (5.MD.2) on Monday and will test over this skill on Tuesday. Some classes may test on Wednesday, depending on how much we are progressing. Feel free to email me if you have questions about the exact date your child will test.
